“Ye have not chosen me, but
I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring
forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatsoever
you ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you.”
Haiti is often referred to as “Little Africa”. It is one of the poorest of third world countries, on the doorstep of the richest nation in the world. The country is about 600 miles southeast of Florida, occupying the western third of the island of Hispaniola, in the Caribbean. The eastern two thirds of the island is occupied by the Dominican Republic, which is a culture very distinct from Haiti. Haiti is about the size of Maryland, and has a population of nine million souls. Eighty percent of the people are unemployed, and around sixty percent are illiterate. The average family subsists on one meal a day of rice and beans. Kwashiorkor, caused by poor diet, is the greatest crippler and killer of children, followed by tuberculosis. Haiti is the poorest country in our hemisphere, and one of the poorest in the whole world. Unlike many poor countries, the poverty in Haiti is deep and comprehensive, afflicting virtually the entire country. The fabric of Haitian culture has been enslaved by Voodoo and superstition for over 200 years. The country has suffered six coup d'états since 1987, and the government is in shambles and filled with corruption. Haiti is a land of despair, suffering, and hopelessness. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only hope for Haiti.
me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth,
and teach me for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all
(Psalms 25:4, 5, NIV)
The Great Commission, given to us by our Lord and Savior as His last earthly message to us was:
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
(Matthew 28:19, 20 NIV)
