“Ye have not chosen me, but
I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring
forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatsoever
you ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you.”
John 15:16
Often
referred to as “Little Africa”, Haiti occupies one third
of the island of Hispaniola in the West Indies. Haiti is roughly
the size of Maryland with a population of eight million souls. Eighty
percent of the people are unemployed, and it is believed seventy
percent are illiterate. The average family subsists on one meal
a day, usually rice and beans or boiled cornmeal cooked outside
in a pot over a charcoal fire. Kwashiorkor, caused by in inadequate
diet, is the greatest crippler and killer of children, with tuberculosis
a close second.
The fabric of Haitian culture is heavily woven with voodoo and
superstition. With six Coup d’Etats since 1987, their repressive
system of government makes Haiti a political land mine. Haitians
continue to see more hunger, more pain, and more suffering.
Many Christians pray that Jesus will continue to change lives,
governments, and conditions.
